Direct Messaging Models

Configure how your users are able to send private messages to one another... or turn off the function for your entire community.

Community is based on context. We know not all communities are the same, so the messaging rules in a network can and should also change.

Honeycommb supports three kinds of Direct Messaging Configurations that community admins can customize during the setup or at a later stage in their community lifespan.

The Everyone Model

The Followers Model

OFF - Turning off the function for all members in your network.

The Everyone Model

This model is very similar to the legacy model and will be the default model for new communities unless specified. This is also the model that we will migrate existing communities to if they have not selected a new model by the depreciation deadline.

The rules for this model are as follows:
1. Everyone can message everyone.

Exceptions For The Everyone Model
  1. Member “A” can not DM member “B” if member “B” blocks member “A”
  2. Member “Y” can not DM member “Z” if member “Z” blocks direct messaging from member “Y”

The Followers Model

The Direct Messaging model enables users to ONLY message other users in their community. So, the relationship must be mutual in that you can only message those users that follow you.

The rules for this model are as follows:
1. I can message any of my followers even if they do not have a follow relationship with each other.
ex. User A Follows User B
User B is now allowed to send a direct message to User A

Exceptions For The Followers Model
  1. Member “A” can not DM member “B” if member “B” blocks member “A”
  2. Member “Y” can not DM member “Z” if member “Z” blocks direct messaging from member “Y”
